My Ultra Weight Gain
I have a pretty accurate and consistent scale. When I came back from running my ultra and I weighed myself I was 5 pounds heavier! What the?? I don't know if this is normal or not after running an ultra. Maybe I took in too much salt. Maybe my body wanted to conserve because I freaked it out. The 5 pounds stayed until today when I'm back down to within 1 pound of my pre-ultra weight. Very strange.
Tonight was the weekly Get Fit Girl Run at Nike. There were 7 people tonight and it was SO hard to see them all show up and go run and me not be able to go with them. Also, Julie the Dietician was wearing the new Nike running skirt. it is super cute and she says it is great to run in. I never thought I'd try one of these, but I think I'll give the nike one a shot. That is when I start running again..
Happy Running,
Jessica

I have no clue if gaining weight is considered normal for an ultra, but from all i understand if you've hydrated correctly there shouldnt be any change. That's the challenge tho, isnt it?? Learning our bodies well enough to get it just right.
We need a pic of you in that new shirt if ya get it!!

yeah, i gained weight after S&S - about 3-4 lbs that took about a week to come off. i think it has to do with water retention and recovery after putting your body through so much stress.

Do those Nike skirts have the little spandex shorts underneath? Or is it more like tennis skirts with the underwear? I have seen running skirts both ways, but not the Nike ones... My thighs actually touch (gasp!) and I worry about chafing with the skirts without the shorts - I mean will my Body Glide hold up after 20 sweaty miles? :-) But from my college squash playing days, I know that doing sports in skirts is surprisingly very comfy...

In ultra events, the main issue with weight gain that I have seen (research or case studies) is due to not enough sodium and too much water... thus water retention. Maybe an option? I didn't read your race nutrition? This was kind of an exercise phys buzz in the past, but here's a link to the gssi info on hyponatremia: http://www.gssiweb.com/reflib/refs/604/SSE_88_Content.cfm?pid=38

I can see the body holding on to some weight to do some fixing up after a hard run like that..
Cheers.
