The Nov 22 run will cover the "loop" portion of the course (clockwise) for a total of 14 miles. There will be options on the second run to go longer if needed.
September 24, 2008 - Twin Peaks 2009 will ALSO take place on the alternate course. Harding Truck Trail will not be open AT ALL in 2009.
September 22, 2008 - This email was sent out to all registered runners. Several emails bounced back to me. If you were supposed to get it and did not, please send me your updated email address!
Twin Peaks 2008 is on track and is only 12 weeks away.
When: December 13th, 2008 50M start at 6AM, 50K start at 7AM
Where: Indian Truck Trail, Corona CA
Directions: Highway 15 South (from Corona) or North (from Lake Elsinore). West on Indian Truck Trail Road. Right on Campbell Ranch Road. Left on Mayhew Canyon Road. Left on Santiago Canyon Road (until the road ends).
ALL runners entered into the Feb 2008 race have been automatically transferred into the Dec 13th, 2008 race. Nothing more is needed on your part for your registration to be valid for this race.
The race is FULL. As you know, there are no refunds. Transfers between runners and upgrades or downgrades for the 50K and 50M races will be allowed up to Nov 1, 2008. Please keep transfers to a minimum as they can complicate the process and cause errors on race day.
Course maps and elevation profiles are available on the race website at http://www.twinpeaks5050.com.
Two training runs will hopefully take place sometime in November. Exact dates will be posted/emailed once we have them.
There will be frequent aid stations along the course (see website for details). Exact details of what will be at these aid stations is yet to be determined but you can at least count on sweet and salty snacks, soda, and water at each station. Ice will likely be available depending on weather conditions. Warm food will be provided at the finish line.
The modified 2008 course is MORE difficult than the original 2007 course. Pacers are allowed and encouraged for the 50 mile runners starting at mile
28. The are no pacers allowed for the 50Km runners.
The time limit for the 50 Mile race will be 15 hours. If you would like extra time to complete the race you may ask for an early start available at 5AM (instead of 6AM). If you want an early start, please email the race director by Dec 1, 2008. There is no time limit for the 50Km race.
Drop bags are available for both races. For the 50K they will be available at mile 14. For the 50 mile they will be available at miles 14 & 28 (same station).
Average weather conditions for this day are a high of 68 and low of 40. It can be a little cooler at the summit, especially if the sun is not out.
Sunrise is 6:46AM and sunset is 4:42PM. 50 mile runners will be required to wear/carry lights at the first aid station they reach after 3:30PM.
We are finalizing sponsors for the 2008 and will have more details in the next update email.
We are also starting to look for volunteers. If you know someone who may be able to volunteer, please have them contact the RD.
The 2009 race opens for registration on Oct 1, 2008 at 8AM PST. It will take place on Feb 28th, 2009 and pending Forest Service approval should be
back on the original course from 2007. The registration link will be available on the website in the near future.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
September 8, 2008 - A few people have asked since I moved - yes the race is still on! Twin Peaks 2008 will still take place on Dec 13, 2008. Twin Peaks 2009 will take palce on Feb 28, 2009 and registration opens on October 1, 20008. Hope to see you there!
May 6, 2008 - Received response from US Forest Service. My new permit application has been approved. I need to get some things in order and send back to them to make it official but that's just technicalities at this point. I'll be posting some information on the alternate course in the very near future.
April 19, 2008 - A new permit application for a modified course has been mailed to the US Forest Service. Details will be posted on this alternate course upon permit approval by the Forest Service. The entire alternate course is outside of the 2007 Santiago Fire burn area so I don't anticipate any problems securing a permit for this course.
April 16, 2008 - I've scouted out a new potential start/finish area for Twin Peaks 2008. The potential alternate course would be slightly tougher but will have more frequent aid stations as well. I'm trying to work out the parking situation and if that gets settled I'll be submitting a new permit application soon for the modified course.
April 10, 2008 - Talked to Forest Ranger about the permit response and potential alternate courses. While the Forest Service still plans to have the Harding Truck Trail open for public use by November of 2008, there is some dispute to this date from the contractors working on repairing these trails. Because of this uncertainty, the original Twin Peaks course will not be available for the December 13, 2008 date. However, I DO plan to hold the race on that date at this point.
Alternate courses are being investigated and this takes a bit of work. The work involved in this includes scouting new areas via google maps and the like, running potential new trails for the course, scouting out possible parking areas for the start and finish line. Etc. Once the new course is determined, a new permit application will be submitted. Hopefully a new permit application can be submitted before the end of April. I do plan to diligently work on this alternate course and updates will be posted here as I have them.
I DO have a potential course in mind. This course may be slightly longer. I'll be scouting out the start/finish area next week hopefully and will be running the new trails before the end of the month if everything is looking good.
April 9, 2008 - Response received from US Forest Service
March 21, 2008 - Permit received by US Forest Service
March 18, 2008 - Permit submitted to US Forest Service
March 8, 2008 - Spoke with my US Forest Ranger contact who suggested I submit a new permit application for the new date of this race on December 13, 2008 and on the original course. It was noted that the Forest Service planned to have the burn area (specifically Harding Truck Trail) open for public use by November of 2008.
